Ard Ri (Gaelic for High King) is a Scottish variant of a game called Hnefatafl. In this game you're either the High King with his Guards, or the Invaders / Draugr.

As the High King you are trying to move to one of the corners in order to escape. Using the Guards to capture Draugr and defend the High King As the Draugr you're trying to capture the High King by surrounding him on all orthogonal sides. Edges count as a a piece surrounding the King.

Players take turns moving any piece 1 space. You capture an opponent piece by having two pieces on opposite sides of the piece.
